The Algarve Way
Crossing the Algarve from east to west though the forgotten interior.
Beginning at Alcoutim (on the border with Spain) and finishing at Cabo Sao Vincente the most south-westerly point in Europe.
Our walking tours avoid the congested tourist areas in favour of more secluded regions, sheltering legendary historic sights, splendid scenery, and natural wonders.
The Algarve Way is quite simply one of Europe's finest long distance walks. It stretches for 300km from the Spanish border at the River Guadiana and pushes west towards a dramatic denouement in Sagres, the very tip of western Europe, which for many centuries to the Portuguese marked the very edge of the known world.
An epic tour, it stands comparison with the best of the long-distance walks in Europe, with the advantage that the weather is usually more pleasant. It is a rewarding way of seeing the real Algarve on unforgettable routes full of tradition.
The walk forms part of the European footpath network, specifically route GR13. The entire route is 300 kilometres and we have cherry picked the best sections for you to enjoy, featuring six of the finest walking routes across the Algarve
We use two centres on this holiday as our journey continues westwards, and all transfers to and from walks and hotels are included. In addition, all dinners will be taken at selected popular local restaurants. Relaxed, sociable evenings that will round off the day perfectly!
We have built considerable flexibility within this tour to cater for the needs and requirements of individual groups. Our walks can be as challenging or as relaxing and easy as you want them to be.
The highlights are multiple, from the constantly changing countryside as you work your way through sweet smelling eucalyptus, cork woods and exotic strawberry tree forests to the picturesque countryside villages and the warmth of the locals. Leaving the beaches of the Algarve firmly behind, you'll discover how the hilly parts of the Algarve are, especially Foia, at 902m the highest peak in the region. Here the whole Algarve unfurls below and you can trace the route you had just followed and were you're about to continue on, with a splendorous view reaching the ocean.
The towns and villages are also star attractions, as Silves, the old Moorish capital of the Algarve, Alcoutim, bordering the Guadiana River and facing Spain on the other margin, or the magnificence of Sagres, Europe's most southwest place. This is where Prince Henry the Navigator dreamed up the epic of putting to sea and finding New Worlds, an adventure that was without parallel until five centuries later when astronauts went to the moon!
