Fado World Heritage
A holiday program of walks & sightseeing in Portugal with Fado as a center piece as you visit Coimbra and Lisbon, great historic cities and the heartlands of Fado. This tour is special and unique, experience Fado as only a few privileged ever do! Fun, informal, unforgettable...
There are two basic styles of Fado: Lisbon and Coimbra. In Lisbon it is always sung by a solo performer, while in Coimbra it is often performed by groups of male university students. They are accompanied by two guitarists, one playing the melody on a twelve-stringed Portuguese guitar (descendant of the English guitar introduced into Portugal by the British community in Porto in the 19th century), and the other supplying the rhythm on the six-stringed viola. The intensely melancholic songs are usually about love, woes, and pains, or express sadness and longing for things that were lost or that were never accomplished, but in Coimbra, it also occasionally contains humor and political undertones.
This tour is a journey into the Portuguese soul.
Listen to Fado - the haunting Portuguese music that has just been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO.
We will enjoy classic Fado evenings in the most typical quarters of Lisbon, where music and dinner combine in a beautiful symphony.
The Coimbra Fado is unique: only students or former students from the University of Coimbra can sing and play it, and those mostly males... because, traditionally, they serenaded the girls with love songs at midnight below their windows. Just like Romeo and Juliet. Wonderful!
According to tradition, to applaud Fado in Lisbon one would clap hands, while in Coimbra coughing, as if clearing one’s throat, is the typical way.
Portugal has a diverse musical culture - from the Celtic folk music of the north to the more Arabic sounds of the south. Fado however is the country's national musical treasure where the heart, soul & history of the people are woven together in a unique blend.
Enjoy a leisurely meal and drinks at Lisbon's Fado houses while learning firsthand about the different Fado styles, instruments, emotions and performers.
We visit the city's old quarters which come alive with the sound of typical songs. Fado Houses, where one can savour the excellent local cooking and listen to the emotional music of Portugal, are unique.
Lisbon, city of the seven hills teems with life as the stylish open-air cafés, reflect their lights in the calm waters of the River Tagus.
In Coimbra we will enjoy the more refined Fado performed by the students of this beautiful city on the banks of the river Mondego.
